Untapped Talent – Supporting Returning Citizens Back into Employment

Prison leavers represent a pool of talent that is largely overlooked. Our prison leavers project aims to help these ex-offenders get into the industry by working with employers. Members who would consider taking on an ex-offender are invited to find out more.

Our prison leavers project aims to explore how our industry can access the talent pool of ex-offenders, including some with roofing experience, by linking them with NFRC Members. In partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), we have created videos and accompanying presentations on careers in roofing that will be shared by the 20 prisons involved in this pilot. This includes Category C and D prisons across England, Scotland and Wales, including youth offender institutions and women's prisons. Do you want to access potentially experienced operatives who are looking for a second chance? You can get involved and help prison leavers find a new career or return to a job they know well.

The individual is supported by NFRC and the prison work coach. This includes advice on training and upskilling as well as guidance on contacting local Members about jobs on release. Those that are new to the industry will be given advice on achieving qualifications in roofing and construction. After a successful visit to North Sea Camp in Lincolnshire, we are planning another visit to a different prison in late September – likely in the London area – and we would like to invite Members who are interested to join us to gain insight into the employability work done within a prison and to understand the support prisoners receive.
