NFRC Backs TrustMark’s “Skilled to Build” Report and Calls for Urgent Action on RMI Workforce

NFRC is pleased to endorse TrustMark’s Skilled to Build report, which underscores the critical need to support and develop our home repair, maintenance, and improvement (RMI) sector.

Simon Ayers MBE delivered an impassioned speech in Parliament, highlighting just how vital RMI is to building, repairing, and improving the nation’s housing stock.

The Skilled to Build report makes it clear: the UK must attract and train hundreds of thousands of new, skilled workers to meet demand and secure our housing stock. If we succeed, the reward will be felt nationwide: over £4 billion added to the economy, alongside better-quality homes, good jobs, and more resilient local communities. Failure to invest in this pipeline will hinder growth and risk leaving our housing stock under-prepared for the future.

NFRC commends TrustMark’s emphasis on the small and micro businesses that form the backbone of the RMI sector. These firms, already stretched for resources, face unique challenges in attracting new talent. TrustMark’s research shines a welcome spotlight on this need for a clear and steady pipeline of work. As the report notes, an “absence of visibility of revenue kills investment,” without which SMEs cannot confidently expand or take on apprentices.
