Dalton Roofing–In Focus
Like a lot of family businesses, Phil stressed the importance of family, his wife Helen and daughter Olivia both work managing in the office, keeping up with the admin and day-to-day running of the business allowing Phil to get on, bringing in new business, and developing the company’s aims and objectives. However, Phil is quick to point out that they view their workforce as an extended family and an integral part of the business, with Rachel the Office Manager, and Paul the site Manager helping to achieve this.
Phil is a great believer in workforce development and is constantly looking to upskill his operatives and bring new people into the industry, although he admits this can prove difficult due to a shortage of training courses in his local area and he is concerned that this could prevent his company growing and diversifying into other sectors of the roofing industry. It has not stopped the company from winning an ‘Outstanding Contribution to Workforce Development’ at a recent awards ceremony.
The lack of new entrants into the industry is one of Phil’s concerns and he is exploring ways of delivering training within the local area. He was pleased to hear that the NFRC had recognised the problem and was looking at ways to address this shortage.
Phil started his Roofing career back in the 80’s with roofing as his work experience from school and then being taken on under the YTS scheme eventually doing an apprenticeship. Still, in his heart, he wanted his own company and it is this ambition that led to Phil starting Dalton Roofing in 1990. His vision and drive haven’t diminished.
He wants the company to develop and grow allowing it to carry out more specialised roofing projects. The company want to become Heritage recognised and have two operatives training in Hereford College in this discipline.
Dalton Roofing joined the NFRC in 2022, as they felt that being a member of a Trade Federation would project a professional image to their customers. The NFRC ticked all the boxes with regards to technical knowledge and backup, as well as keeping the company informed on the latest developments within the industry.
Customer satisfaction is really important to Phil and his team. They get a lot of work from recommendations and deal with any complaints immediately and this, Phil feels, is one of the things that distinguishes NFRC members from the run of the mill roofing contractors.
On Thursday 3 October 2024 Dalton Roofing attended the Business Masters 2024 – East Midlands Awards Ceremony at Crowne Plaza in Nottingham and won Family Business of the Year 2024.
