RAAC Removal Case Study–NFRC and M&J Group

by Megan Poole | Aug 13, 2024

NFRC Member M&J Group (Construction and Roofing) Limited, invited NFRC to write a case study where they were undertaking the removal of failing RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) planks at Bedford Modern School, which was being replaced under the safety measures issued by the Department of Education. Last year, the government ordered 104 English schools, nurseries, and colleges with RAAC to close affected buildings immediately until safety measures are introduced. The number of schools around the UK that have been impacted by the RAAC crisis, has now risen to 214 according to new information from the Department for Education.

M&J Group (Construction and Roofing) Limited worked with Bedford Modern School to introduce safety measures and commenced with the removal of RAAC planks within the affected roof areas, including installing a new structural deck and roof system. This highly specialist work, requires significant risk management controls by MJ Group’s project management, including overseeing specialist asbestos removal teams. It was a pleasure to be offered the opportunity to undertake a case study to understand fully the challenges the removal of RAAC planks places on our members undertaking such work.

In collaboration with CROSS and DLUHC, NFRC produced a Safety Alert outlining the cautious approach that should be adopted if a roofing contractor suspects RAAC planks are present on a flat roof refurbishment. You can download the Safety Alert and Case Study.
